A Happy Birthday, Mr. Bayle

Emile

“Emile Bayle should be San Marino’s mayor for life,” a former resident once told me.

“Why?” seemed the natural retort.

“His name,” my friend said. “‘Emile Bayle.’ It just sounds like a name the mayor should have. And that deep, booming voice. It’s a mayor’s voice.”

And my friend went on for the next fifteen minutes saying ‘Mayor Emile Bayle’ in his best Mayor Emile Bayle voice, which wasn’t too bad if I recall.

A lot could be said for the idea, though when he retired from public office Emile seemed content to spend the rest of his days watching his grandchildren perform.

A two-term City Councilman and former mayor (we gave that part away for sure), Bayle has served on every worthwhile board in the city including president of City Club, Rotary Club, the Schools Foundation, Library Foundation – you name it. Bayle was instrumental in the bringing the Crowell Public Library to fruition and is still one of the “Friends.” He and son-in-law Andy Barth have funded several scholarships at San Marino High School, from where the vast majority of the Bayle clan graduated.

Emile recently turned 85, a bittersweet affiar, no doubt, without his beloved Tinker, who passed away a year ago this November 7. He’s still among the most beloved in town.          – Mitch Lehman
