San Marino School Board Votes to Consider Gym On HMS Grounds

By Mitch Lehman

The San Marino School Board on Tuesday evening authorized Superintendent Alex Cherniss to move forward on a plan to consider building a new on-campus gymnasium for Huntington Middle School rather than proceed with negotiations to purchase the San Marino Center and build it there.

“The most practical and advantageous option is to build the gym on its current location,” Cherniss said. “This is the right thing to do on many levels. Clearly, the current gym is completely inadequate.”

For the past three weeks, Cherniss has been in discussions with the City of San Marino regarding a possible purchase of the San Marino Center, formerly the Women’s Club. Estimates obtained by the city place the value of the property between $2.4 and $2.7 million, monies Cherniss and others involved with the project now believe can be better spent on the gym and possibly, other upgrades at HMS.
