SBAC Testing Comes to San Marino High School

San Marino High School students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, or SBAC, starting on May 4.

The SBAC is a new test that will assess student achievement in English/Language Arts and Mathematics as aligned with the Common Core Standards. It replaces the Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR).

As educators continue to improve their methods, critical thinking skills have become more important. These tests go beyond just answering multiple-choice questions; it also ask students to understand and explain how they reach their conclusions, said Gary McGuigan, assistant superintendent for education, who spoke to the PTA Association on  the history of the SBAC and preparations made at the San Marino High School for the test.
