The Huntington Adds 3 New Pieces to American Art Collection

By Stacy Lee

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens recently acquired three new artworks – including a painting by the late Pasadena artist Helen Lundeberg.

Lundeberg’s “Irises (The Sentinels)” will be added to the San Marino cultural institution’s American art collection in addition to Milton Avery’s “Burlesque” painting and Sargent Claude Johnson’s Head of a Boy sculpture.

“All three pieces will play important roles in the galleries,” said Jessica Todd Smith, Virginia Steele Scott Chief Curator of American Art. “The Avery helps us talk about modernism, the Lundeberg strengthens our representation of both female artists and painters working in California and the Johnson joins our growing collection of work by African-American artists.”
