Barks & Books Helps New Crowell Library Readers

By Stacy Lee

On the second Tuesday of every month, 8-year-old Basset hound Spencer makes an appearance at Crowell Public Library in San Marino.

While this mild-mannered pooch delights library patrons as he poses for photos and welcomes bellyrubs, his primary purpose is to help early childhood literacy.

Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA long-time volunteer Joen Mitchell has brought Spencer to Crowell Public Library for the past three years as part of Barks & Books–a humane education program offered at numerous public libraries in the animal welfare organization’s service area.

“Different teams of volunteers and their dogs go to different libraries in our service cities once a month,” said Mitchell, who has volunteered for PHS for more than 30 years. “All of us who do Barks & Books use our own dogs. I got Spencer from the Pasadena Humane Society when he was just a year old.”
