The San Gabriel City Council approved an agreement to hire Kirk Summers as the interim tri-city fire chief of San Marino, San Gabriel and South Pasadena on Tuesday, June 2.

Summers is the retired chief for the Chino Valley Independent Fire District. He will serve as interim fire chief for up to six months, while a simultaneous recruitment is underway for a new permanent chief in all three cities. He will serve all three cities since they share fire services, but will be an employee of San Gabriel. He will take his post immediately.

Former Fire Chief Jim Frawley left his post in April to pursue a job with the City of Santa Cruz, and at that time the three city managers appointed San Marino Deputy Chief Mark Phillips to the interim chief position. However, after assessing the situation Chief Phillips recognized that he was not interested in the permanent Fire Chief position. Phillips and the city managers determined that hiring a retired chief would be a preferable option for the interim fire chief position. Phillips welcomes Chief Summers to the position so he can now return to his position as deputy chief in San Marino.
