San Marino Council Adds Rules to Prevent Mansionization

By Krista Daly

As the San Marino City Council continues its efforts to stop mansionization, the council members approved a number of new housing regulations during the Friday, May 29 meeting.

Staff explored nine different options, but the council only agreed to eight of them.

Staff will research the possibility of amending the development standards to include a greater setback for a second story addition as well as the ability to include a mentor to the Design Review Committee. The city council also agreed to strengthen penalty fees, define a remodel, improve notifications to neighbors and improve the design review process.
