Salute to Our Veterans: Lawrence Fu

Our Veterans

In honor of those who served our country in the armed forces, this San Marino Tribune article continues a series of individual salutes to our courageous veterans.

By Mitch Lehman

Lawrence Fu was a 21-one-year-old college student at the University of California, Irvine entering his senior year when the thought hit him to take the road not previously chosen.

“I was working all the time in research labs thought I wanted to do something different,” said Fu, a 1999 graduate of San Marino High School, who was at the time studying Biological Sciences, with specialization in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

That’s pretty “different.”

After receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree, Fu – a former Titan baseball player – enlisted in the United States Marine Corps reserves before attending Officers Candidate School. His five-year stint included two deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Between March – September 2006 and October 2007 to March 2008, Fu served as the Mobile Assault Platoon commander and was responsible for 40 Marines and eight armored HMMWVs – high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles, to those of us not wearing stripes.
