Debates Occur Over San Marino Housing Codes, Guidelines

By Krista Daly

The current San Marino Residential Guidelines have been the source of debate for sometime now as mansionization has increased within the city.

Since the Design Review Committee has taken the most criticism over this issue, they chose to address the problem head on during their June 17 meeting. The idea was to let the committee members communicate to the community that there are different ways to address the massing issue through the zoning code, said Design Review Committee member Strefan Fauble.

“It has been suggested that the problem is not the code… but l think the problem has been the code all along,” he said.

He explained that the residential guidelines and the building codes are contradictory because although it is technically within code to build a house up to the maximum boundary, the residential guidelines force the DRC to consider its compatibility with the neighborhood.
