Annual Pasadena Chalk Festival is Tradition for Many Artists

By Stacy Lee

The annual Pasadena Chalk Festival has become a tradition among many artists.

More than 600 participated in the event held on June 20 and 21 at the Paseo Colorado shopping center.

It was at the Pasadena Chalk Festival that chalk artist Jamie Leake of Culver City proposed to Sarah Burch three years ago by drawing a 3-D box with an engagement ring inside.

“I thought to myself that this would be an epic way of doing it,” Leake said. “I thought it would be super romantic.”

He said he tricked her by acting like he was drawing a different mural. Then he had approximately 200 people waiting around his chalk mural for the proposal.

“I thought it was really cool,” Burch said. “He did a great job. It was a beautiful way of starting that part of our life together.”

Amanda, Angel and Henry Casas of Los Angeles have been taking part in the Pasadena Chalk Festival for the past five years.

Amanda, now 16, started drawing chalk murals at the festival when she was just 11 years old.“My old school (Ribet Academy) used to have a chalk festival,” she said. “It was fun and I really liked it.”
