J.P. Blecksmith Memorial 5K Walk & Run starts Fourth of July in San Marino

By Mitch Lehman

A lithe young man darted toward the finish line at Saturday’s J.P. Blecksmith Memorial 5K Walk & Run, both his pace and attire belying his honest participation in the event. Had a local Rosie Ruiz snuck into the field?

How could someone traverse the course in 15:34 – a full 20 seconds ahead of his closest competitor – while sporting a red, long-sleeve dress shirt that appeared to have been doused with water to make it appear its wearer had endured more toil in deceit than in the street.

Oh we of little faith…

Ruiz, you may recall, emerged from the crowd at the 1980 Boston Marathon, ran the final half mile of the most famous race in the world and was declared the winner.

But not Eric Kleinsasser, 25, who – in a sweat-stained patriotic button-down won the 11th annual Blecksmith Run, presented by the San Marino Tribune, as can be attested by Nicolaus Jakowec, who finished second in 15:54, and Jack Van Scoter, who scooted to the finish line in 16:28.

San Marino High School rising senior Olivia Harrigian was the first female finisher and #32 overall, breaking the tape in 18:58.
