In a stunning move, the members of the San Marino Design Review Committee elected Bharat Patel, one of its newest members, to the chairman position.
Typically, protocol states that the longest standing member is chosen as chairman while the second longest standing member is given the vice chairman seat. But there is no law stating that has to occur. Valerie Flores was nominated by Strefan Fauble to be the next chairman, but did not receive a second.
“I was honored to be nominated, but I was not surprised that the newly installed members vote aligned with the City Council’s actions to reconstitute the DRC as reaction to concerns over mansionization. I do not share the belief that reconstituting the DRC will make the problem of mansionization go away,” Flores said explaining that she believes structural changes to the city’s zoning code is the only way to ensure this.
