Breaking News Update – SMHS Classmate Remembers McMahon Fondly

Updated Monday, July 27 – 4:26 p.m.

A San Marino High School classmate of slain former “Deadliest Catch” producer Joe McMahon called the murder “tragic, senseless” when reached Monday, July 28.

“Joe was the nicest guy,” said the fellow member of San Marino High School’s graduating class of 2009, who asked not to be identified. “He was friendly and loved other people. This is terrible.”

McMahon, 25, was shot to death in the early morning hours of Friday, July 24 outside of the family home in Chapman Woods. Brandon Rafiepour, 24, yet another member of the San Marino High School graduating class of 2009, is suspected of killing McMahon, a former teammate on the Titan varsity football team, then taking his own life outside his Brentwood home at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

“It’s very sad, terrible,” said D.R. Moreland, who coached both men and is now the athletic director at San Marino High School. Mr. Moreland said that recalls both players well and remembers they were friends. “They hung out together a lot,” said Moreland.

The source on record with The Tribune said he had not been in contact with Rafiepour “for about three years. I heard he was out in West L.A., doing his thing.”

McMahon and Rafiepour were teammates on San Marino High School’s 2007 varsity football team. McMahon, an offensive and defensive lineman listed at 6’5” and 205 lbs., went on to play his senior year. Rafiepour, a 6’0” linebacker, did not. Both received substantial playing time and were among the statistical leaders in tackles during their junior year, the fall of 2007.

Rafiepour was convicted of drunk driving in 2014 and in 2009, was picked up for driving while in possession of marijuana.
