Taekwondo Is Just for Kicks to Collo Kids

By Mitch Lehman

Emma Collo, an eighth-grader at Huntington Middle School, recently returned from Austin, Texas, after competing in the 2015 United States National Championships in Taekwondo. Miss Collo is currently coached and trained by Master Joseph Salim.  Emma earned her way to the quarterfinals with an overtime golden point, but later fell to the eventual gold medalist of the featherweight division.

Having trained for nearly eight years, Emma continues to train and work towards her goals of winning the Nationals.

Her brother Samuel Collo, is a third degree black belt, but took this season off to work on school. He teaches taekwondo at SideKick Taekwondo in Chino Hills.

Emma picked up the sport at age 5 and is currently a second degree black belt. In 2012 – her first year of competition, Emma won the gold medal at the ATU national championships in Atlanta. In 2013, she won the bronze medal at the U.S. Open, gold in the California State championships and gold at the ATU nationals. Emma picked up bronze in 2014 at both the Arizona State and U.S. nationals.
