New Gym at Huntington Middle School Is A Go

By Mitch Lehman

The San Marino School Board on Aug. 14 gave the go-ahead for a new gymnasium at Huntington Middle School that would open in November 2017 if the project sticks to schedule. The two-level, 26,000-square-foot, $14 million facility will include locker rooms, classrooms, a media lab, offices – and of course, a much needed gymnasium – with additional multi-purpose space and will be built in the same general location as the existing facility.

The board voted 4-0, with Chris Norgaard excused from the meeting, to enter into a contract with LPA, the largest schools architectural firm in Southern California, which created significant site improvements for the Arcadia School District.

Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss told The Tribune that the district is “almost halfway” to assembling the necessary funding for the project through input from the Capital Facilities Fund as well as support from the community.

LPA will immediately begin to create drawings for the facility, which will be sent to the Department of the State Architect in January. Provided matters stay on schedule, demolition of the existing gym will begin in June 2016 with construction starting in October 2016.
