They won’t be wandering around lost this year.
San Marino High School’s campus is now filled with more than 300 freshmen students who are being led by the upper classmen in a mentorship program.
Link Crew was started this year as a way to help freshmen transition seamlessly from middle school to high school and to guide them through their first year, said Courtney Rushing, a San Marino High School teacher who helped start Link Crew with Counselor Laura Ives.
Freshman Aston Yong said he was happy with the program because just on day one of meeting his Link Crew leader, he learned about managing time and various information about high school.
His friend Aaron Fong said he thought the program was a good idea because he is getting to know teachers and other students as well his way around campus.
“We can go into the year steadfast,” he said.
Communication will continue between leaders and 9th graders over the course of the school year. Rushing said there will be group meet ups at least once a month, but she encourages mentors and their mentees to meet as often as they would like.
Many of the 60 leaders were recommended by teachers, she said. They received training and a handbook before they met the freshmen on Friday, Aug. 14.
