The Beach and the Boardroom Converge for Abrams, Baxter

By Mitch Lehman

A long-standing television advertising campaign during the 80s centered around a man named Victor Kiam, who stared into the camera and declared ‘I love Norelco electric razors so much – I bought the company!’

A similar sentiment swept through the 91108 this past January when San Marino resident Dave Abrams and former San Marinan Charlie Baxter teamed up with a small group of friends and acquired Reyn Spooner, manufacturer of iconic Hawaiian shirts.

“It was a rescue mission as much as a business deal,” said Abrams. “Charlie and I have been passionate about the brand for more than 25 years and neither of us was happy with what we perceived to be the direction of the business. We wanted to make sure Reyn Spooner was around for the next generation.”

Abrams, with a background in manufacturing and corporate turnarounds, and Baxter – experienced in retail, distribution and e-commerce – pooled their energies to lead the revival of the company. Baxter is chairman, Abrams vice chairman, and Kirk Hubbard, a 25-year veteran of the company, remains its president.
