SMUSD Ranks No. 1 in State

By Krista Daly

San Marino Unified School District has done it again. Despite a more challenging testing system, SMUSD maintains its No. 1 ranking for total percentage of all students who met or exceeded state standards in both English Language Arts and Math.

“I’m really proud of our teachers and students,” said Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss.

Since the CAASPP test is based upon Common Core teaching, it requires students to think critically rather than rely on memorization of facts. Eighty-four percent of San Marino students met or exceeded the state standard.

“The (current seniors) made a difference in the outcome by understanding the importance of doing their best,” said San Marino High School Principal Mary Johnson. “They have benefited from the excellent education offered in this district, and they certainly showed how well they have internalized all those lessons in literacy, mathematics, and problem solving.”

In Math alone, SMUSD ranks No. 1 at 84 percent. However, in looking only at English Language Arts, SMUSD ranks No.3 at 84 percent. La Canada and Piedmont City both are at 85 percent.
