While San Marino’s Lacy Park Rose Arbor may be a vision from afar, a closeup inspection reveals wood beams that are deteriorating from dry rot and weathering.

City Manager John Schaefer and San Marino Heritage President Shirley Jagels walked through the arbor on Friday, Sept. 25 to determine the next steps for repair or replacement of the structure.

“I’m going to get a scientific explanation of why the structure has failed in the places that it has failed,” Schaefer said. “We’re going to get a bid on what it would cost to replace the parts that are damaged versus everything.”

He said there was $20,000 in this year’s budget to repair the beams at the Rose Arbor. He said after the city Public Works crews examined the project, they found that they didn’t have enough money to purchase all of the wood needed for replacements. Schaefer also said they were concerned about the stability of the structure explaining the possibility that certain parts would fall if one beam was removed like the game Jenga.

Jagels said she thinks most of the wood beams are salvageable and she’d like to see a report on what needs to be done to the Rose Arbor. “I just want to have a record of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it,” she said.

Schaefer said if the arbor were to be rebuilt, it could be erected the exact way it is now.

Jagels will be forming a group to support the restoration of the Rose Arbor called Friends of the Lacy Park Rose Arbor. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Jagels at 626-441-1404 or shirleyjagels@earthlink.net.
