The Rev. Heather Blackstone recently joined St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church to serve as its new Director of Youth Ministries.

“Following a national search, we found Heather in our own back yard,” the Rev. Canon George Woodward III said. “She is an ordained UCC (United Church of Christ) pastor, deeply educated, spiritually passionate and pastorally deep. She continues to work also in the spiritual formation of university students at Occidental, and is already quite beloved by our youth and their parents.”

“Heather comes to St. Edmund’s with a wealth of biblical and theological education and professional experience with Christian youth,” church Junior Warden Carolyn Seitz said. “As an ordained minister, she will additionally assist in leading both traditional and contemporary worship, teaching confirmation and bible study classes, and offering pastoral counseling and care.”

Blackstone was hired as the newly created full-time Director of Youth Ministries and she’ll lead the youth and young adult educational spectrum.

“She will assume leadership/teaching of the Middle School, High School, and Young Adult programs, while coordinating with the Sunday School Supervisor, the Youth Advocacy Team, other youth leaders and parents,” Seitz said.

Blackstone said she will establish a cohesive Sunday school program that will not only teach stories in the Bible, but give students the lessons on the cultures of people in the Bible.

“One of the ways we will accomplish this is by simply studying the Bible,” she said. “However, the world is full of God’s fingerprints and so we will take advantage of that by viewing films, watching plays, visiting museums and discussing literature with the hope of seeing God from as many angles as possible.”
