Devonport Project to Start Over at Design Review Committee

Height and mass once again dominated the conversation regarding the appeal case of 2730 Devonport Road.

With an overall height of 22 feet 6 inches, and a livable area of 3,580 sq. ft., community members voiced their concerns about the proposed home’s compatibility within the neighborhood.

The project had gone through the Design Review Committee where it was approved, but appealed by neighbors. Then it was denied by the Planning Commission and appealed again by the owner to the city council. Ultimately, with a 3-1 vote (Dennis Kneier being the dissenting vote), the case was denied by the city council.

“I respect the rights of individual property owners, l also respect the neighbors, and there is a tricky balance,” Kneier said referring to these rights.

Mayor Eugene Sun said though he agrees that property rights are very important, the main question has to be, “Is this house compatible?”
