“Breaking Through,” a world premier musical that debuted on Oct. 27 at the Pasadena Playhouse, follows a young, talented singer/songwriter trying to break into the music business. Charlie Jane struggles with who she wants to be as people in the industry try to pull her to be a pop singer.

“She’s finding out it’s not all as it appears to be,” said Kacee Clanton, a Pasadena native portraying a singer named Karina.

The cast includes Alison Luff as Charlie Jane, Matt Magnusson as Scorpio, Robert W. Arbogast as Jed Barnes, David Atkinson as Peter, Will Collyer as Alex, Teya Patt as Gwyn, Katherine Tokarz as Liz and Nita Whitaker as Amanda. It is directed by Sheldon Epps, choreographed by Tyce Diorio, music and lyrics are by Cliff Downs and Katie Kahanovitz and the book is by Kirsten Guenther.

Clanton’s character Karina, who is a little older, has experienced everything Charlie Jane is going through and is feeling as if she’s being replaced. Clanton said when she first met with Director Sheldon Epps, some of the emotions of her character were spot on.

“She’s watching her youth slip away and is heading into irrelevancy,” Clanton said stating women in their 30s and 40s still have gifts to share.
