Ad Hoc Committee Formed for Budget Review

By Krista Daly

It may not be in the form of a “Blue Ribbon Committee,” but San Marino residents will have an opportunity to have their say when it comes to the city budget.

The San Marino City Council unanimously agreed on Oct. 30 to form an ad hoc committee comprised of two councilmembers (to be named at a later date) as well as allow the public to serve as advisors. This is in conjunction with a new budget process approved at the Oct. 14 council meeting in which individual budget issues are broken out over a series of meetings throughout six months.

This will provide more transparency to the budget as well as increased citizen participation.

Though the Blue Ribbon Committee is a good idea on paper, a number of questions regarding its implementation cannot be answered right now. This includes how committed members would be chosen and how their evaluation of the budget would be accomplished.
