More than 20 of San Marino’s armed forces veterans assembled at the San Marino Center on Nov. 11 to swap stories, share laughs – and down a couple donuts on the day set aside to honor their service.
The San Marino Veteran’s Organization, headed up by San Marino resident and United States Marine Corps and veteran Lawrence Fu, participated in what is believed to be just the second acknowledgement of Veteran’s Day in San Marino after last year’s debut.
City Councilman Dick Ward, Tommy Wong, 99-year-old Joel Ruble, Richard Berklite, Norman Marshall, Steve Antosy, Bruce Campbell, Joseph Wong, George Tom Gon, Bill Chun Hoon, Burdette Brekken, Donald Cook, City Councilman Dennis Kneier, Dr. Dave Bryan, John Lucas, Citizen Gene Ruckh, John Morris, Chuck Patterson and Robert Almanza – plus a few others who left before they could be identified – spent 90 minutes discussing their military service.
“If you noticed, not one veteran said that they had a bad experience,” said Cook. “Everybody was able to mention positive aspects of their service.”
