Monday marks the opening of a new business venture for San Marino resident J.D. Hornberger, one that gives back to the homeless for every single item sold.

With every pair of underwear or t-shirt sold through MOCS (Measure of Character and Style), one pair of underwear, a shirt and two pairs of socks is donated to a homeless shelter.

“Giving back is just part of being in business,” Hornberger said.

“It exemplifies what I believe businesses should do,” he added stating that these people are often overlooked and this is the perfect opportunity to engage everyone.

It all started on Thanksgiving Day two years ago when a group of dads and their teenage sons went to Skid Row in Los Angeles to pass out donuts, coffee and new underwear. Within 10 minutes, the underwear was gone, but there was plenty of leftover food and drinks, Hornberger said.

A couple months later, he found himself at a conference where they were discussing businesses that give back. Hornberger realized there was a need to do this with underwear, and shortly thereafter hired a designer and got to work on doing just that.
