San Marino Police MOU to be Finalized on Dec. 9

The Memorandum of Understanding Between Police and the City Basically Shows 2.2% Raise

By Krista Daly

San Marino Police Officers are essentially getting a 2.2 percent raise this year as the cafeteria benefit is set to increase by $200 per employee per month.

The contract is not “signed, sealed and delivered,” but nine months of negotiations between the city and the police officers’ association has led them to this agreement. San Marino City Council received a presentation on the changes during their regular meeting on Nov. 12, and although not everyone was thrilled with the proposal, council agreed to direct staff to submit a resolution to be approved at the Dec. 9 meeting.

The fiscal impact to the city is $77,422 over one fiscal year, which has already been included in the city budget. The agreement is for one year only – from July 12, 2015 to July 9, 2016, but the city has agreed to make it retroactive to July 1, 2015.

Councilmember Dennis Kneier and Vice Mayor Allan Yung had many questions, and they were uncomfortable with the raise. Kneier said it doesn’t matter that the increase is to cafeteria benefits, not salary, because the city still has to pay.
