Teardown Mislabeled as Remodel

“I do think the brand new house is going to look good, but I object to the way it was presented to us.”

San Marino resident Glenda Gardner said this of her neighbor’s plans for 1905 Wellesley, which was described as another teardown disguised as a remodel. Plans for a detached two-car garage that would cause the property to exceed maximum allowable lot coverage and a side yard wall went before the San Marino Planning Commission on Nov. 24.

“It’s OK to do a new house when you tell us in the beginning, not after you get a remodel permit,” Commissioner Raymond Cheng said. “We see more and more of this.”

Susan Jakubowski, a commissioner, agreed stating this is more than a 50 percent remodel.

“When we approve something, we want you to be honest,” Cheng said.
