San Marino Police Chief Provides Tips to Avoid Holiday Crime

The holidays bring ripe opportunity for criminals to take advantage of kindhearted and unsuspecting victims, San Marino Police Chief John Incontro told The Tribune last week.

Crime is up, according to Incontro and there is traditionally a spike during the winter holiday period. The chief provided a checklist residents can use to make sure they do not become victims during this period of high exposure.

Package Delivery

Many residents make additional online purchases during the holidays and have packages delivered to their homes. Suspects know this and will follow a delivery truck or cruise through a neighborhood looking for packages in front of residences.

“When you order a package, obtain the shipping tracking number and follow your packages movement to your home,” said Incontro. “Include specific delivery information such as having the package sent to your place of business, a trusted neighbor or have the package placed in an area outside the view of the street. If you find the package has not been delivered, contact the shipping company to notify them and contact the SMPD.”
