They once played on the same high school volleyball team and now – some seven years and 2,500 miles later – San Marino High School graduates Pamela Hung and Kelly Mar – will be running the 2016 Boston Marathon for charity.

Pamela, 25, a 2009 graduate of San Marino High School, will represent the Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, or BCNC. She has a goal of raising $9,500 to benefit BCNC’s family-centered services for children, youth and families. “Pamela’s application to run stood out because of her dedication and commitment to BCNC’s mission,” said Kelly Yardley, BCNC development associate.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Pamela is an active member of Boston’s Asian American community, serving as the President of the Taiwanese American Professionals organization and as a member of the steering committee for the Saffron Circle, a multi-generational and multi-ethnic Asian giving circle located in Greater Boston.
“BCNC is a Boston community institution that makes the city a more welcoming place for Asian immigrants,” Pamela said. “My parents emigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan and I know that if I had just arrived in Boston from a different country, BCNC would be a home away from home for me, too.” This is Pamela’s first marathon and she admits to it being a “dream come true” for her, in terms of her participation this year.

Kelly Mar has been accepted to participate in the upcoming Boston Marathon to help raise money and awareness for the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, Greater Boston Chapter. Kelly, a 2010 graduate of San Marino High School, became involved in the organization when her best friend was involved in a horrific car accident three years ago that left her paralyzed from the neck down as the result of being hit by a drunk driver. Kelly flew home from college in 2013 during a short holiday weekend to be with her friend and is running in her honor. Donations to Kelly’s cause may be made at https://friendraising2.donorpro.com/campaigns/128/personal/12018.
Any and all donations are appreciated.
