New Wing & Entrance to Huntington’s American Art Galleries to Open in October

The new wing and entrance to the American Art Galleries at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens will be opening this fall.

The 8,600-square-foot Jonathan and Karin Fielding Wing, which was named after the top donors of the $10.3 million project, will be unveiled on Oct. 22.

Designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners, the new wing will contain 5,000 square feet of gallery space accessed by a glass entrance and lobby on the south side of the building. The latter will mirror what is on the structure’s north side.

The new wing’s exhibition will feature more than 200 objects from the Fieldings’ own personal collection of 18th– and early 19th– century works, including many paintings and pieces of furniture.

“The collection, display, and contextualization of historical American art is among our chief priorities,” Huntington President Laura Skandera Trombley said. “And the educational and inspirational value of the new wing is immeasurable. It will bring to light unforgettable works made with American originality, and is sure to delight and surprise visitors of all ages. We are profoundly grateful to Jonathan and Karin Fielding for their vision and generosity.”

A part of the Scott Galleries that has been undergoing an expansion project will reopen on June 18. Visitors can expect a new room containing art from the Gail-Oxford Collection, which is comprised of 18th-century decorative works that were recently donated to The Huntington, as well as a redesigned Dorothy Collis Brown Wing with works by famous architects Charles and Henry Greene. Another section of the building highlighting an exhibition on loan, “Yasuhiro Ishimoto: Bilingual Photography and the Architecture of Greene & Greene” will open on June 18 in the Susan and Stephen Chandler Wing.

The Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art started with 6,800 square feet of gallery space when it opened in 1984. The Lois and Robert F. Erburu Gallery was added in 2009 for an additional 16,300 square feet and the gallery was reinstalled to cover American art from the Colonial Period to mid-20th Century. Then in 2014, more than 5,000 square feet was added to include 20th century art.
