The San Marino High School varsity baseball team reversed a negative trend on Tuesday when they came from behind to defeat Monrovia, who two weeks ago wrapped up the Rio Hondo League championship. With the victory, the Titans claimed second place and hope to get a more favorable playoff seeding.

Trailing 1-0 on the Wildcats’ home field, centerfielder Aiden Santino walked and went to second on a bunt by shortstop Bryson Smith. The ever-alert Santino went to third when Monrovia’s defense failed to cover that base in fielding Smith’s safety. The senior came home when Garrett Hill grounded to third to make the score 1-1.

Smith homered to the deepest part of the ballpark in the top of the 5th inning to give San Marino a 2-1 lead and the Titans would need no more. Carson Glazier, who had surrendered just one controversial run in four innings gave way to Tommy Hannan, who retired all nine batters he faced to close out the victory.

Last Thursday, the Titans defeated Maranatha 9-7 to win the 1st annual Mickey McNamee Classic, a tournament hosted by San Marino.

After manufacturing a run in the bottom of the first inning, Ruben Garcia pounded a two-run double that scored Hill and Santino to make it 3-0. Later in the game, the Minutemen intentionally walked Hill to face Garcia with the bases loaded. The junior third baseman made them regret their decision when he hammered another two-run double to left center.

Later in the frame, Glazier lifted yet another two-run double over the head of Maranatha leftfielder Charles Acker to score Michael Won and Garcia to put the game out of reach 9-0.

Or so it seemed. After surrendering just one hit in the first six innings, sophomore Blake Cabot was given the rest of the day off, only to watch two relievers surrender seven innings and bring the potential winning run to the plate before San Marino closed out the contest.

The Titans will receive their playoff assignment on Monday, May 16. Please see sanmarinotribune.com for the latest.
