Casual clothing and some light yard work were two features of a recent day for San Marino Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss. The unconventional work schedule came courtesy of his new boss, Luke Chapman, who cashed in his Superintendent for a Day voucher for a day of field maintenance, Grad Night supervision, a job walk and a visit to his brother’s classroom.

“We had an action packed day,” Dr. Cherniss told The Tribune.

Luke assisted with maintenance at San Marino High School’s McNamee Field, where the dynamic duo dragged the baseball infield, made slight repairs to the pitcher’s mound and painted the batter’s box. While at SMHS, the supes checked in on the progress of the Grad Night set. At Carver, they visited with Principal Liz Hollingsworth and viewed the school’s Field Day, which happened to be taking place on the yard.

Back at the district office, Luke received a behind-the-scenes look at the surveillance camera system that monitors the four school sites. At Huntington Middle School, they reviewed plans for the new Barth Athletic Complex and even enjoyed a site walk. The day ended at Valentine Elementary School, where Luke visited Ms. Duncan’s 2nd grade classroom where his brother, Nico, was busy with his science work.

“I learned more from Luke today than he learned from me,” Cherniss said. “It was a great experience. Our students have so much knowledge to share and it was great to have the opportunity to spend a day with Superintendent of the Day Luke Chapman!”

Chapman and Cherniss gave a special shout out to Ronnie Parra, who assisted them with the baseball field maintenance project.
