City Hires First Public Works Director in Over 10 Years

The City of San Marino has hired Dan Wall to fill the position of Public Works Director and City Engineer. Wall will be the first person in about 10 years who will oversee the Public Works Department as his primary duty. Assistant City Manager Lucy Garcia has overseen the department for the past several years.

Wall will be wrapping up his service as public works director and interim planning and building director in the City of Baldwin Park this month. He has also served as the assistant director of public works in Whittier and the city engineer for the City of San Fernando. Prior to working in the public sector, Wall worked for private sector engineering firms.

In a media release from the city, Wall said “I look forward to joining the talented and dedicated group of professionals serving the people of San Marino.”

City Manager John Schaefer is excited to have Wall on board. Schaefer hopes the new director will “reduce costs and improve efficiency” in the the public works department, which oversees the upkeep of streets, storm drains, sewers, Lacy Park and other city grounds.

He anticipates the new public works director will spend his first few days getting acquainted with department staff, finalizing the city’s draft pavement management plan and reviewing the city’s other capital improvement projects, such as the Lacy Park restroom renovations.

In the long run, Wall will determine the proper allocation of staff within the public works department, including answering the question, “How much can we take away from contract [services]?”

Wall, a professional engineer, licensed real estate broker and a licensed general contractor, will start his new job on July 5. Born and raised in Pacoima, he and his wife live in Granada Hills with their five children. He has a bachelor’s of science degree in civil engineering from Cal State Northridge and a M.B.A. in management and finance from the University of Southern California. He has also studied Leadership and the Management of Violence at the United States Military Academy.
