Skateboarders Spot Early Morning Fire

A four-firefighter crew aboard San Marino’s Engine 91 quickly extinguished a fire early Wednesday morning at a vacant, two-story residence in the 2900 block of Monterey Road.

Young people skateboarding on Monterey Road made the initial 911 call when they heard the home’s alarm sound and saw flashing lights coming from the home.

The SMPD arrived on scene shortly before 2 a.m. and contacted the San Marino Fire Department upon noticing signs of a fire.

San Marino Firefighters forced entry into the locked home. They identified the fire to be between the floor and joists of an upstairs bedroom and quickly contained the fire to that part of the home, according to San Gabriel Firefighter/Paramedic Antonio Negrete, who serves as public information officer for the Verdugo Fire Communication Center. The fire was extinguished in about 30 minutes.

Fire units from South Pasadena, Alhambra and Pasadena also responded, added Firefighter Negrete. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The estimated cost of damages is also under investigation.
