San Marino Falls to Rivals La Cañada, South Pas

The San Marino High School varsity girls’ basketball team stood toe-to-toe with host La Cañada, which competes in Division 1A, in the first quarter of a Rio Hondo League showdown, but the Spartan’s offense and defense came to life in the second, pulling away from the Titans en route to a 63-30 victory last Friday.

The Titans (10-11 overall record, 1-3 in league) trailed LC, 14-13, after one quarter of play, but were unable to keep up with the home squad in the second. La Cañada limited San Marino to only six points in the second quarter and two points in the third, allowing the Spartans to build an insurmountable lead.
Kathleen Liu led San Marino with 10 points, 3 rebounds, three steals and one assist, and Kyli Bonavich added six points, three rebounds and two steals. Joyce Liang totaled five points, four rebounds and two steals, Audrey Lin also netted five points, grabbed two rebounds and recorded one assist and a steal, Sabella Sing finished with two points, a team-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Audrey Bain contributed two points and one rebound.
San Marino hosted Monrovia in a league contest on Wednesday and will take on visiting La Cañada in a Rio Hondo League game on Friday, Jan. 27, at 5:30 p.m.

South Pasadena 61
San Marino 50

A big third quarter lifted the Tigers over visiting San Marino, 61-50, in a Rio Hondo League contest last Friday.
The Titans and Tigers were tied, 23-23, at the half, but San Marino was unable to carry over its offensive intensity into the third quarter. South Pasadena outscored the Titans, 18-3, in the third to build a 15-point lead. San Marino fought back in the fourth with 24 points, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Joyce Liang led San Marino with 14 points, two rebounds, two steals and two blocks, and vKathleen Liu added 11 points, two assists and one rebound. Sabella Singh tallied nine points, seven rebounds and a block, Hanna Wang netted six points, Kyli Bonavich finished with six points, five rebounds, one steal and a block, Nikki Wong totaled four points, five rebounds and five assists, Audrey Bain grabbed two rebounds and blocked a shot, Audrey Lin recorded a rebound and one steal, and Cheyenne Trac contributed one rebound and an assist.
