Trojan Affiliates to Highlight Stroke Awareness March 2

The women of USC Trojan Affiliates will welcome Dr. Nerses Sanossian to speak at the upcoming meeting on Thursday, March 2, about “Stroke Awareness for You and Your Family.”
The meeting will begin with refreshments at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m., at the home of San Marino resident Valerie Gumbiner Weiss. Community members are encouraged to attend.
“Stroke is the leading cause of disability in this country, yet stroke is an entirely preventable disease. We aim to reduce the burden of stroke in Southern California through prevention and education,” Sanossian said.
Sanossian directs a multidisciplinary program focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of patients experiencing stroke. The stroke program encompasses inpatient care, outpatient care and research focused on the development of enhanced diagnostic and treatment modalities for preventing stroke.
A focus for the program is transient ischemic attack, commonly known as a “mini-stroke,” which is a temporary disturbance of the blood flow to the brain, and which often occurs with sudden and brief neurological symptoms. TIA is an early warning of an impending stroke as it reflects an active process.
“I believe that research, diagnosis and treatment of TIA patients can yield the greatest benefits because an averted stroke is the best outcome,” Sanossian said.
Sanossian is an associate professor of neurology at Keck Medical Center of USC, and director of LAC+USC Stroke Center and Roxanna Todd Hodges Comprehensive Stroke Clinic and TIA program, Keck Medical Center. He was recently awarded the Keck School of Medicine excellence in teaching award. He is widely recognized as an invaluable leader, stroke expert and contributor to the community.
Sanossian earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, N.Y. He completed his residency in neurology at Montefiore Medical Center at Albert Einstein and returned to Los Angeles for fellowship training in vascular neurology at the UCLA Stroke Center. He currently serves as president of the board of directors of the American Heart Association for Los Angeles County. He specializes in the diagnosis and management of stroke.
