Yoga Studio Approved for Downtown Location

The Planning Commission gave the green light to a prospective yoga and meditation studio at its meeting on March 22, provided the owner ensures that parking does not spill over into the City Hall lot.
The studio required a zoning variance because of the relative lack of parking dedicated to the location, which is at 2260 Huntington Drive. The Planning Commission was happy to grant it, however, given the prospect of a new business setting up shop in town.
The applicant said she plans to encourage her customers to either carpool or bicycle to sessions and will post warnings about parking. She added she also will be mindful of when meetings were scheduled at City Hall.
In other business, the Planning Commission approved conditional use permits for a home at 1750 Chelsea Road, which is having an addition constructed and also being remodeled. This project had previously been approved by the commission but, in a cost-cutting measure, the applicants substantially downsized the scale of their additions and needed to revisit the commission.
The permits for exceeding maximum livable area and exceeding maximum lot coverage were granted in a 3-1 vote (Commissioner James Okazaki voted no and vice chair Susan Jakubowski recused herself because she lives in the neighborhood), but the commission voted along the same lines to deny the variance for a high retaining wall in the driveway.
Per city code, any fence or wall fewer than 20 feet from the side street property line cannot be taller than 4 feet. The applicant will have to meet those conditions to proceed.
Applicants for a music studio at 2491 Huntington Drive withdrew their application and the applicants who had appealed a Design Review Committee denial of their project withdrew their appeal to the Planning Commission.
