For her contributions to local education and historic preservation, Ivy Sun was chosen as U.S. Rep. Judy Chu’s honoree from San Marino for the eighth annual Congressional Women of the Year.
Sun, a 30-year educator and longtime San Marino resident, stood among 16 other women from locales within Chu’s district on Saturday, April 8, to be recognized for the achievement. She stood proudly with fellow educators, immigrants, civil servants, a police chief and a NASA engineer as Chu commemorated each for her contributions to her congressional district, which stretches from Pasadena to Upland.
“These are women who stood out in their communities because of their drive and commitment to give back to the San Gabriel Valley,” Chu said, opening her event at the San Marino Center. “Being chosen from among so many is a true honor. It’s a testament to the admiration of your neighbors.”
Sun, a career school administrator, said living in San Marino offered her an opportunity to open her wings when it came to giving back to the community that helped her so much.
“San Marino is a great city that gave us a great opportunity to serve,” she said, also referring to her husband, Mayor Dr. Richard Sun. “School is usually the grassroots here and then we have the Chinese Club.”
The Suns, as recent immigrants from Taiwan, quickly became involved with the Chinese Club of San Marino, with Ivy serving as a chairwoman at one point. She also has served with the San Gabriel-Changua Sister City Committee, the National Taiwan University Alumni Association of Southern California and the Centennial Book Committee of the San Marino Historical Society.
Currently, Ivy Sun is chairwoman of the supervisory board of the Chinese American Education Association and is the Honorary Chairwoman of the Los Angeles Chapter of the International Leadership Foundation. In 2012, she was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award in recognition of her service to children and families in the San Gabriel Valley community and was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary Club of San Marino in 2014.
In receiving her award, Ivy Sun paid tribute to Chu and her fellow award recipients for being strong female role models for their communities and constituents.
“It’s really an honor, especially when you know a lot of these other recipients,” Ivy Sun said. “Everyone is outstanding and successful in their own ways. It’s recognition and also an encouragement.”
