More than 160 Huntington Middle School band students came together last week for a celebration of excellence. The young musicians performed in an unusual concert setting; instead of the traditional massed band setting, students demonstrated their mastery by playing in small ensembles.
“Small group performance really tests a student’s musicianship,” said music director Bill McDaniel. “In the full band, if you don’t know your part you can usually hide, but when there are only a few other players, everyone knows really fast if you know your part or not. I’m proud that the kids rose to the occasion. They really sounded great.”
