Tim Barber Ltd. Architecture Designs Homes for Legacy Neighborhoods

One of Tim Barber’s projects

The recent trend of building the largest possible home on a residential lot is being halted by outcry from homeowners in the long-established areas of Pasadena, San Marino and La Cañada-Flintridge. Neighborhood associations, city councils and local building codes are becoming more stringent to protect neighborhoods from being “super-sized” with new homes and additions. Strict water-conservation standards have also helped to slow this trend, and have encouraged the use of graywater systems, cisterns and rain gardens. This new appreciation for conserving our resources and preserving our neighborhoods asks the question: Where are the architects capable of adapting our existing buildings?
Tim Barber Ltd. Architecture has spent the past 22 years designing, renovating and restoring legacy homes from Pasadena to the Palisades. A champion of preservation and re-use, the firm was awarded an Historic Preservation Award by the city of Pasadena’s Historic Preservation Commission in 2016 for its work on the former Richter Laboratory property in the San Rafael Hills. TBL also restored the famed Wolf’s Lair in Hollywoodland and the Jonathan Club natatorium in downtown. The firm is noted for working with landmark districts and homeowner associations to ensure that renovations and new homes complement the stately older homes, which give neighborhoods their grace. The firm’s LEED credentials attest to its knowledge of water-saving and conserving resources.
The Tim Barber Ltd. team is in construction on a four-unit condominium on the last vacant lot on Pasadena’s Millionaire’s Row and are soon to break ground on a new Spanish colonial residence in Arcadia. Both projects required a unique combination of quality, practicality and beauty as well as careful city cooperation, realistic budgets and accurate timelines. Living next door to one of TBL’s homes might be almost as good as owning one.
