South Pasadena Outlasts San Marino In Home Volleyball Finale

The Titan varsity volleyball program said goodbye to five seniors last week and based on the way San Marino played in their final home game of the season, South Pasadena will be glad to see them graduate.

Playing at a level of inspiration rarely seen throughout the year, the Titans took the first set off the Rio Hondo League champion Tigers before eventually bowing out by scores of 25-27, 25-21, 27-25 and 25-14. Truth be told, San Marino easily could have claimed the second and third sets, but the scores are the scores.

Middle blockers Billy Tsai and Michael Shahan were the most active of San Marino’s hitting corps and opposite Owen Boss had one his most dynamic games of the season.

Coach Tony Chou went with an unorthodox lineup that moved Raye Cheng from the back row to the front and South Pasadena struggled to find an answer. Xavier Beck played well in his swansong and junior setter Nate Wang gave hope for the future of Titan volleyball.

The offensive assault of South Pasadena’s Matt Scholtz and Gunther Vaden was eventually too much for San Marino, who finished the season 7-17 overall and 1-7 in the Rio Hondo League.
