Fourth of July celebrations began bright and early with the J.P. Blecksmith 5K Memorial Run. Anthony Stone won the men’s race and Elizabeth Ben-Ishai was the fastest woman. More than 700 people participated in the event, which started and ended in front of City Hall. The run looped around Lacy Park, where runners could see people preparing for the firework show later that night.
The event began in 2005 to commemorate Blecksmith, a fallen Marine, who was killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq, during Operation Phantom Fury. Blecksmith was a San Marino resident and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2003.
