Barth Athletics Complex Ahead of Schedule

Construction on Huntington Middle School’s Barth Athletics Complex is ahead of schedule, according to San Marino Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss and Project Manager Gerald Schober.

Crews began drilling for the elevator shaft on Nov. 9 after excavating and re-compacting soil on the site in preparation for building the structure. It’s anticipated the project will be completed before the end of the 2018-19 school year, several months ahead of its original August, 2019 timeline.

Demolition was completed for the project in early August before bidding was opened at the end of that month. The bid was awarded at the Sept. 12 Board of Education meeting and work began on Sept. 25.

Plans for the complex include a full-size CIF regulation gymnasium, fitness room, boys’ and girls’ locker rooms, a second floor multi-purpose room, track, athletic field and two media classrooms.

The different elements of the complex are designed to “help facilitate the school’s and community’s health, fitness, recreational programs and social events,” according to the district’s online project page.

San Marino residents Avery and Andy Barth made an initial project donation last year of $3.5 million. Residents Lisa and Tim Sloan purchased naming rights for the fitness center for $500,000 and the Barger Family, likewise, will have naming rights of the multi-purpose room for their gift of $250,000. Other contributors to the project include a $100,000 donation from Calvin Lo and his wife, Wendy Hsu, for one of the two media classrooms; $100,000 from Paul and Alice Su for the second media arts classroom; $50,000 donation from the family of Valerie & Aaron Weiss, $25,000 from Pat Haden through the Fletcher Jones Foundation and $50,000 from the William Hurt Foundation and $10,000 from the Chinese Club of San Marino.

The San Marino Unified School District has contributed $2 million in funds that will be used for the complex’s facilities. It had been 20 years since the district was forced to shelve the project to cut costs, when it was approved in February with all board members voting in favor.

The project was scheduled for 615 consecutive calendar days, weather permitting, and project manager Gerald Schober said they “remain extremely confident in the ability to complete the project by the end of the 2018-2019 school year.”

Digging for the structure began the week of Thanksgiving.
