District to Hold Study Session to Discuss Facilities Program

Will be held on Tuesday, January 16 In District Office from 4-6 pm.

The San Marino Unified School District will hold a study session on Tuesday, January 16 to discuss a possible capital facilities program. The meeting will be held in the district office from 4–6:00 p.m.

Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss will present to the school board the facility and structural needs of the district, including financial solutions to achieve the goals, which could include a bond.

On January 9, the district sent out a community wide mailer explaining some of the facility needs and mentioning the option of a bond measure as a financial solution. The mailer was sent by Cherniss and the school board, which includes President Shelley Ryan, Vice President Lisa Link, Clerk Chris Norgaard and Board Members Nam Jack and C. Joseph Chang. The mailer mentions a bond measure, that would cost property owners approximately $60 per $100,000 of assessed value.

Cherniss could recommend a bond measure to the board at the January 16 study session, and could go to the board for first reading as early as January 23rd. The motion would require a second reading at the Tuesday, February 13 meeting and then a roll call vote of the school board. The board would then select members to form a bond committee and provide them with the district’s needs assessment.

If the measure is placed before voters on June 5, it would require 55% approval for passage.
