Senior Blake Cabot struck out seven and didn’t walk a soul and junior Kade Wentz came through in the clutch on Wednesday afternoon as San Marino High School’s varsity baseball team won a crucial Rio Hondo League contest at La Cañada.
Cabot went the distance and surrendered just three hits as the Titans improved to 5-6-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Wentz delivered a single up the middle with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning to plate Harrison Dunkel, who scored the only run San Marino would need, thanks to Cabot’s heroics.
“Blake pitched an outstanding game,” head Coach Mike Hobbie said. “He has only been hit well once this season and that was in Florida during our spring break tournament.”
Another southpaw turned in an impressive performance a day earlier as junior Zack Balbin confounded Temple City all afternoon. But the Rams kept putting the ball in play and the Titans kept making errors as the hosts prevailed 5-0 without scoring a single earned run.
“Zack pitched very well,” Hobbie said. “I was very impressed with his performance.”
Monrovia and La Cañada visit McNamee Field on Monday, April 9 and Tuesday, April 10, respectively. Both games begin at 3:30 p.m.
