Senior Anessa Lee was basically untouchable, sweeping all three of her Peninsula singles opponents 6-0 and an adjustment to the doubles lineup by head Coach Melwin Pereira hit the payline as his Lady Titans took six of the nine sets on that half of the scorecard. Add it all together and you have an 11-7 victory for San Marino in a matchup that pitted two of the top tennis programs in Southern California.
“We haven’t beaten Peninsula in quite a while, so this is very nice” said Pereira.
The Lady Titans also picked up singles wins from Katie Kirkendall and Nathalie Genyk, clearing the stage for the doubles pairings of Selina Wu & Grace Carter, Margaret Piatos & Anna Moeller and Elaine Wu & Rakel Ang, each of which won two of their three doubles sets.
The Lady Titans punctuated that victory with a home win over Murietta Valley on Tuesday afternoon. Lee was again unbeatable, freshman Selina Wu picked up two singles wins and freshman Valerie Kuo also notched a singles point.
The Wu-Ang clan went 3-0 in doubles action and the teams of Kirkendall & Moeller and Piatos & Carter claimed a doubles point apiece as San Marino won by a final score of 11-7 and improved to 2-1 in the process. The Lady Titans’ only loss this season came at the hands of second-ranked Campbell Hall.
“They are winning as a team,” said Pereira. “Every single girl on the team contributed to the win. We needed every one of them today.”
Lining up with Pereira’s strategy of taking on all comers, San Marino heads down Huntington Drive next Monday afternoon to challenge the 8th-ranked Arcadia Apaches at 3:15 p.m.
