Baca Reports for 3-Year Prison Sentence

Lee Baca

San Marino resident and former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca surrendered on Wednesday, Feb. 5, and entered FCI La Tuna near El Paso, Texas, where he will serve a three-year federal sentence for obstruction of justice.
FCI La Tuna, a federal correctional institution, is considered a “low security” facility and has an adjacent minimum security camp. The prison has a total of 861 inmates, with 654 housed in the main facility and 207 located at the camp, according to its website.
The Supreme Court on Jan. 13 denied Baca’s petition to reopen the case for appeal and he was ordered to report to La Tuna.
Three friends drove Baca to Texas in a van to meet the surrender deadline.
In March 2017, Baca was convicted of obstructing an FBI investigation into civil rights violations at Los Angeles County jails, which are under the authority of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, and lying to investigators. He was later sentenced to serve three years in federal prison, but remained free during the appeals process, which ended in January.
Baca, 77, and his wife have lived in San Marino for at least two decades and the former sheriff was often seen jogging through the streets of San Marino and attending occasional meetings of the Rotary Club of San Marino. He was a frequent participant in The Tribune’s J.P. Blecksmith Memorial 5K Walk & Run, which is held annually on Independence Day.
