It will take more than a pandemic to stop San Marino’s premier art initiative. The PTA Reflections Art Program is ready to launch for the 2020-21 school year.
For San Marino Unified School District students who enjoy art, music and dance, or have an interest in writing or producing films and taking photos, Reflections offers an opportunity to express creativity by participating in a national platform.
This year’s theme, “I Matter Because…,” calls for students’ unique interpretations through the arts.
Reflections, one of the biggest events that involves all four SMUSD schools, is an achievement program that provides opportunities for students to receive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme. The program also increases community awareness of the importance of the arts in education.
There are six arts categories — dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Students may enter in one or more categories and special artists are welcome to submit entries. The deadline to submit at each school unit is Friday, Oct. 9.
Entries are judged at the local PTA unit level, council, district PTA, state and national level. For information, contact the respective school’s Reflections chair.
The San Marino PTA Council will host a virtual district-wide open house to showcase the work of all local entries on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
This year’s Reflections chairs include Amanda Guthman, Valentine Elementary School; Shirline Hartono and Michelle Hou, Carver Elementary School; and Channi Kaur, Huntington Middle School and San Marino High School. Mai Noguchi-Liu is the PTA Council Reflections chair.
