Rio Hondo League coaches have one more year to deal with San Marino High School senior Kinu Takasugi, then she becomes the Little East Conference’s problem.
Takasugi, the dynamic shortstop for the Titan softball team, announced last week that she will continue her career at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, a Division III school. Takasugi also was approached by Regis University, Salve Regina University and Lesley University and had interest from Eastern Connecticut State University.
Takasugi began playing softball 11 years ago and currently suits up for So Cal Athletics Marinakis/Jacquish. The squad qualified for the national championships, but the tournament was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Takasugi was named as the Titan team’s most valuable player after her sophomore and junior seasons. She was named to the Rio Hondo first team as a sophomore, and as a freshman was tabbed rookie of the year and named to the all-league second team. The league did not present awards after this past season, which was abbreviated by the pandemic.
As a sophomore, Takasugi batted .444 with an on-base percentage of .554 and a fielding percentage of .939. Takasugi also played varsity basketball as a freshman, proving herself a dynamic point guard who had a penchant for frustrating her opponents with her tenacious defense.
The daughter of Haydeh and Jon Takasugi, Kinu has a brother, Matthew, who is 15.
She will continue her softball career under the tutelage of coach Bob Huckabee.
“I am looking forward to being a part of the Corsairs softball program and playing at the next level,” said Takasugi. “I am very thankful for all my friends and family who have helped me along the way.”
