Obituary | Anna Patricia Farrar

Anna Patricia (Austin) Farrar, known to everyone as Pat, was born on April 24, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John (Jack) and Mildred (Rasmussen) Austin. The family moved first to Phoenix, Arizona, then to Las Vegas, Nevada, in Pat’s formative years before settling permanently in California when Pat was 12 years old. She attended Santa Ana high school and held her very first job at Disneyland when it first opened in the mid-1950s. It was here she met her first husband, Richard Lee Williams. Pat and Richard had three children together, Kevin Richard, Annalee Ida, and Linda Marie in the span of five years, living primarily in Glendale.

After divorcing from Richard in the early 1960s, Pat took to working as a bookkeeper in her father’s Pharmacy & Drug businesses in Glendale and Montrose over the next several years while raising her three children. While working in the Glendale drug business, she met Vernon Dewees Farrar, who was a drug salesman calling on the Austin family business. They were married in 1967 and Verne adopted the three children from Pat’s first marriage. Pat and Verne had a son together, Michael Vernon, born in 1969.
Pat lived most of her life and raised her children in Glendale on St. Elizabeth Road. She loved her home there and took pride in constantly updating the interior, doing yardwork and making the house a home. She had a wonderful and vast network of lifelong friends, met over the years through her schooling and supporting her children’s activities. She eventually retired and sold the home in Glendale and moved to Reno, Nevada, in 2006 to be closer to her daughters and grandkids who had moved there years earlier. She found a lovely house with views of downtown Reno; Pat always loved her view homes and spent hours tending the garden. Being in northern Nevada allowed Pat access to the Lake Tahoe area and she spent much of her later life enjoying this recreation area, often accompanied by her children and grandchildren. Although her final years were affected by her battle with Alzheimer’s, she was always very optimistic and happy in life and was well known for her smile and upbeat personality. She was a beautiful soul, always caring about others more than herself and was a fabulous friend to those who knew her. She was a wonderful mother, constantly putting her children first and was always the life of the party with her outgoing and bubbly personality. She could talk sports and athletics with anyone, often impressing even the most ardent sportsman with her knowledge of any game. Pat will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her dearly.
Pat’s passions in life included sewing and knitting in a variety of different styles, home decorating and furniture repurposing, gardening, her work and, of course, her children and grandchildren. She held a variety of jobs, mostly relating to accounting and bookkeeping. She once worked for Chuck Barris, the famous Hollywood producer of game shows and received a gag gift Emmy statue for her efforts which she prominently displayed in her home. She was extremely proud of her ability to provide for her family, and while she never finished college herself, witnessed all four of her children attain college degrees. She was the consummate mom, always there for her children, whether it was a sport they participated in, cheerleading, dance, beauty contests and any other activity they were involved in. Pat loved the outdoors; camping, hiking, fishing, and spending time at the beach. She liked to travel and meet new people who often became fast friends. She liked lighthouses and sunsets. She loved the ocean most of all, and frequently took the kids for week-long beach house vacations. She was also a sports nut and loved to attend LA Dodger baseball games in person, watch on TV or listen on the radio.
In addition to three of her four children, Pat is survived by her sister Elaine Deming and brother Victor Austin along with six grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, and more than twenty great nieces and nephews. Pat is reunited with her oldest daughter Annalee, whose death preceded her in late 2019.
No services are planned at this time.
